Forms

Build your own forms for event sign-ups, contact, reader sign-ups, early read feedback and team submissions, put them on any site or in a letter, and read the answers.

A form asks people questions and keeps their answers. Inkbreaker has one form builder for every kind of form: an event sign-up, your contact form, the sign-up for a reader group, the feedback form for an early read, a team’s submission form, or any other form you need, like an application or a waitlist.

Making a form

A team’s forms are under Team › Forms. Your own are one step from your Creator Site: add a Form section to a page and choose All your forms, or Make a form if you have none yet. Choose New to start one. Start from a ready form, such as an event sign-up, a contact form or an agent query, or start blank. Every form lists its questions in the order people see them, and How people see it shows the form as they will.

For each question you can:

  • switch it on or off,
  • make it required,
  • change its wording and add help under it,
  • move it up or down.

Add a question offers ready-made questions, such as a one-line pitch, a bio, comparable titles or links, and questions of your own: a short or long answer, one choice or several, a dropdown, yes or no, a box to agree to, a link or several, a star rating, a number, notes by chapter, a sample of the writing, or a file. A long answer can have a word or character limit, and a sample can be measured in words or pages.

Choose Save form when you are done. Changing a form never changes the answers you already have.

Never searched for

You do not have to go looking for a form. Edit the form sits wherever a form is used: the Form and Contact sections in your site editor, a reader group’s settings, the questions step of an early read, and a team’s Slush or Queries. The builder opens with a Back link to where you came from.

On your sites

Add a Form section to any page of your Creator Site, a world site or a team site, pick the form, and it appears in your site’s own fonts and colors. Every form with a link also has an address of its own you can share anywhere.

Your Contact form section asks with your contact form. The topics people can write about, and where each one goes, stay in the section’s settings. To ask more, add questions to the form. Every message, with all its answers, arrives in Desk › Planning › Messages.

A Letters or reader group sign-up asks with that group’s form. People still confirm by email before they join, and a group that gets posted copies still asks for an address. Their answers show as columns in your readers list.

In a letter

Under a letter’s words, Add › A form puts a button to one of your forms in the letter. Each reader’s button is their own: the form opens with their name and email already filled in, and their answer shows who it came from.

Turn on One answer per person in the form and a reader who answers again from their letter replaces their earlier answer instead of adding a second one.

Feedback for early reads

When you send an early read, pick one of your feedback forms or start one from a template (ARC review, beta read, sensitivity read, publisher or agent, or blank). The same form can be used for every read you send. A read keeps the questions it was sent with, so changing the form later only changes the reads you send after that.

Reading the answers

Each form’s Answers page shows every answer, newest first, with the question beside each one. You get a notification when new answers arrive. Contact messages go to your Messages inbox, team submissions to the team’s Slush or Queries, and early read feedback to the read’s page.

More question types

The builder can also take date, phone and information questions, questions that show only for an earlier answer, several forms of the same kind, and answers as columns you can filter and download. See Free vs. Pro for what each plan includes.
