Translations and editions

Make a translation of a piece or a collection, write it beside the original, and keep it in step when the original changes.

A translation is an edition of your work in another language. It opens beside the original, paragraph by paragraph, and marks each paragraph of the original that changes after you translate it.

Make a translation of a piece

  1. On your Desk, open the piece’s ⋮ menu and choose Make a translation.
  2. Choose the Language.
  3. Check the Title of this edition.
  4. Choose Make the edition.

The edition opens in the editor with the Translation pane beside it. Each paragraph starts empty and shows Empty paragraph until you write in it.

Make a translation of a collection

  1. On your Desk, open the collection’s ⋮ menu and choose Make a translation. In an open collection, it is in the New menu.
  2. Choose the Language. Under For readers in, choose a region or Anywhere.
  3. Check the Title of this edition, then choose Make the edition.

The edition has the same chapters and parts as the original. Each chapter opens beside its original chapter.

The Translation pane

The pane opens beside an edition. To open it again, choose More, then Tools, then Translation.

  • The pane lists the original’s paragraphs in order. Each one shows where its translation stands: Translated, Not started, Original changed or New in the original.
  • The bar at the top shows how many paragraphs are translated.
  • The paragraph you are writing is highlighted in the pane.
  • Choose a paragraph in the pane to go to its translation.
  • Needs you lists only the paragraphs marked Original changed or New in the original.

When the original changes

A translated paragraph is marked Original changed when its original is edited. The pane shows the words removed and the words added.

  1. Update your translation.
  2. Choose Mark as updated.

A paragraph of the original with nothing in the translation paired with it is marked New in the original: one added to the original, or one whose translation was deleted.

  1. Put your cursor in the paragraph of your translation that matches it. Add a paragraph first if there is none.
  2. Choose Pair with the paragraph I’m in.

Use the same steps after you split or merge paragraphs.

Bring in a translation you already have

  1. Open the translation in the editor.
  2. Open Document settings and set the Language of this piece.
  3. Under Language versions, choose Link a language version and choose the original.
  4. Next to the original, choose This is a translation of it.

The paragraphs are paired in order and the Translation pane opens. Check the pairs in the pane, and fix any paragraph with Pair with the paragraph I’m in.

Where each edition stands

A collection with an edition has an Editions tab. It shows each edition, chapter by chapter:

  • How many paragraphs of the chapter are translated.
  • How many of its paragraphs changed in the original.
  • Not in this edition: a chapter that was added to the original after the edition was made.

Choose an edition’s entry for a chapter to open that chapter beside its original.

Editions in a team

On a team’s edition, the Translation pane also has Notes and Glossary, and its ⋮ menu has Who works on it.

Who works on it

  1. In the pane’s ⋮ menu, choose Who works on it.
  2. Choose a member and choose Assign, as translator or reviewer.

A member with the Translator role sees only the editions they are assigned to. To widen it, turn on See all the team’s work for their role in the team’s settings.

Review

Each translated chapter is Draft, In review or Approved.

  1. The translator chooses Send for review in the pane’s ⋮ menu.
  2. The reviewer suggests changes with track changes.
  3. The reviewer chooses Approve, or Send back to return it to its translator.

Changed since it was approved shows when an approved chapter is edited.

Notes for the author

  1. On a paragraph in the pane, choose Note.
  2. Write the note and choose Send.

The Notes tab lists every note under its paragraph. Choose Reply to answer and Resolve when it is settled.

Glossary

The Glossary tab lists the work’s terms with how they are written in this edition’s language. In this chapter lists the terms this chapter uses. Names from the original’s world are listed with them.

  • To set how a term is written, type it in the box under the term.
  • To add a term, choose Add a term, then Add to the glossary.
  • To remove one, choose Remove from the glossary.

You wrote before

On the paragraph you are translating, You wrote before shows paragraphs like it that the team has already translated into the same language, with their translations. Choose Use to put one where you are typing.

Check an edition with the Sentinel

On an edition, the Sentinel’s Edition against its original check flags:

  • A glossary term the original uses that the paragraph does not write as the glossary does.
  • Not translated yet: a paragraph that reads the same as the original.
  • The original changed here: an original paragraph edited after it was translated.

Turn the check on or off under the Sentinel’s Scanners.
